#TEALIFE - EXPLORING TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY TEAWARE WITH TONY FERGUSON

6:30-9 pm Mondays April 22nd-June 17th (8 sessions/no class Memorial Day, May 27th)


In this class you will learn to create tea cups, tea bowls (aka ‘chawan’ in Japanese tea ceremony), and tea pots from the instructor’s study of Chinese, Japanese and Korean ceramics. Wabi sabi forming and glazing aesthetics will be explored as students will be encouraged to develop their voice in clay. Wheel and hand building techniques will be demonstrated in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. Class culminates with a cone 10 gas kiln firing.


During class, you will smell, taste and learn about various types of herbal teas; class will end with a tea sampling and ceremony on the night of the kiln opening.When it comes to drinks, tea is second only to water in popularity and is the drink with the longest history. Ceremonies involving tea drinking are common in countries all around the world. Some of the most well-known tea ceremonies take place in China, Japan, and Korea.These countries are recognized for turning tea drinking into an art form.


Beginning through advanced students are welcome.
